The Trough of Bowland is the single most rewarding ride you can do straight from our Dunsop Bridge base – and on an e-bike, its notorious climbs become genuinely enjoyable rather than something to dread.
This narrow, twisting road cuts through the heart of the Forest of Bowland Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, linking Dunsop Bridge with the Trough Inn and on towards Lancaster. It’s one of the most photographed roads in Lancashire, and for good reason: heather moorland, forestry plantations and dramatic sweeping valleys unfold at every turn.
The Route
From our base, head north-west out of Dunsop Bridge following the River Dunsop before climbing steadily onto the open moor. The gradient is where an e-bike genuinely changes the experience – on a conventional bike this is a long, grinding climb that puts many riders off before they’ve even reached the best views. With the motor’s assistance, you can set a comfortable pace and actually look up to enjoy the scenery instead of staring at your front wheel.
A there-and-back ride to the summit of the Trough and back to Dunsop Bridge is around 14 miles, easily achievable in half a day with stops for photos. Riders looking for a longer day can continue down the far side towards Marshaw and Abbeystead before looping back.
What to Look Out For
Keep an eye out for red grouse bursting from the heather, and on clear days the views stretch out towards Morecambe Bay to the west. The Trough itself – the actual pass between the hills – sits at around 320 metres, so wrap up even on a warm day; it’s noticeably cooler and windier at the top than down in the valley.
Refuelling
The Inn at Whitewell, a little further down the valley towards Clitheroe, is a favourite stop for cyclists and makes a good target for a longer loop. Alternatively, Puddleducks Tea Room in Dunsop Bridge is perfectly placed for a well-earned drink and slice of cake before or after your ride.
Why an E-Bike Makes the Difference
We hear from a lot of visitors who’ve avoided the Trough of Bowland for years because of its reputation for tough climbing. Hiring one of our e-bikes takes that barrier away completely – the motor only assists while you pedal, so you’re still getting a proper workout and the satisfaction of riding it under your own steam, just without the burning legs at the top.
Whether you’re an experienced cyclist wanting to finally tackle this famous climb without destroying your legs, or a family group wanting a scenic outing with a bit of a challenge, this is one of our most recommended local rides.
